Manganese serves as an important alloying agent. There are many different types of manganese alloys that are available on the market. This includes ferro manganese alloys, copper manganese alloys, nickel manganese alloys and more.


What Are Alloys?

Alloys are metals made by combining two or more metallic elements to strengthen or create a corrosion resistant metal. Manganese alloys, also called mangalloy, are alloys that utilize the addition of manganese. The Manganese content is used to deoxidize an alloy while enhancing its mechanical strength and castability.


How Are Alloys Made?

While paying attention to various melting points, most alloys are prepared by mixing metals in a molten state. The molten metal mixture is then poured into metal or sand mold and allowed to solidify. The main alloy ingredient is melted first and then the others are added to it and are allowed to completely dissolve.

Alloys are normally melted within a melting and casting furnace that utilizes a vacuum or has a protective atmosphere.

Alloys have chemical properties that will remain unaffected after they are formed into an alloy. It's Important to point out that alloys can also be separated by melting or liquidation as well. 

The best way to separate an alloy is by maintaining a specific temperature. This allows one of the elements within the alloy to melt away, leaving behind the other element in its original solid state.

Alloys Made With Manganese 

Manganese is an essential part of any high strength alloy. The levels of manganese determine the increase in an alloy's hardness and ductility. 


Mangalloy is heat treatable, but manganese inevitably lowers the temperature where austenite transforms into ferrite. Unlike carbon steel, mangalloy softens rather than hardens when rapidly cooled, restoring the ductility from a work-hardened state. Most mangalloy grades are ready for use directly after annealing and  quenching with no further need of tempering processes.
